Prepare Your Virginia Beach Home For Winter

Winter is coming so there is no better time to prepare your home for all Jack Frost can throw at you.  Here are some simple things that can really pay off in the long run for getting your home prepared for the cold months ahead!

Yard Work: If snow is in your forecast this winter, now is the time to trim back those trees and rake up those leaves. Once the snow settles in, it’s a lot harder to get that yard work done, and it can be harmful and even dangerous if the snow gets too heavy on the branches. Cutting them back can prevent those heavy branches from falling unexpectedly on cars, sidewalks or even your home. Raking up the fall leaves isn’t dangerous per say, but it can be for your lawn! Yard work is a great activity to do with the whole family and even neighbors! Help each other out and make a block party of it!

Check The House For Efficiency: We live in a really old house that can be very drafty in the winter. To help make it more efficient we use draft dodgers. For those of you who aren’t familiar with draft dodgers they are those long heavy sock things that go in the door jamb to prevent the cold winds from getting in and the warm air from getting out. Another thing you can do to help with heat efficiency is to check the air filters for your heating system. A clean air filter means the heat the furnace is pushing out is unblocked by dust and other gunk that can accumulate in the filters. Which is a very good thing!

In Case Of A Power Outage: In the off chance that there is a power outage and your heat is off, if you have a fireplace, make sure it is in good working order before you need it. Make sure the chimney is open, and if it’s gas, make sure it is unclogged and lighting properly. A working fireplace can make a huge difference if you are without heat in the middle of winter. Also make sure you have your power and gas company’s numbers on hand in case of an outage. I am the type that “Googles it.” Google doesn’t work if the power is out! So save it in your phone or better yet, on a good old-fashioned piece of paper.

Snow and Ice Removal: Where we live, if you don’t have your walkway and sidewalk in front of your house clear, you get a ticket! At first I thought, “That’s outrageous!” and I wanted to protest. But really it’s a safety issue. In the winter, things can get snowy, which can often turn to ice and becomes extremely slick and dangerous. Do yourself a favor and have a snow shovel and some rock salt on hand to keep those walkways (especially stairs) nice and clear. Stay on top of it too. Once it piles up it’s a lot harder to take on.
